1981 – Our local NAMI affiliate was founded in Fort Myers, FL by a group of family members who were tired of their children bearing the burden of blame for their mental illnesses. Unhappy with the lack of services available and the treatment of those living with mental health disorders, the family members sought out others with similar concerns. The first meeting held to address these issues in mental health was much larger than expected, and seeking to continue the momentum, the group made the decision to join NAMI. Recognizing the potential to make a true difference in our community by sharing NAMI’s vision and offering NAMI Signature Programs the group pursued incorporation and became an affiliate organization.
